Whiskey Review: Michter’s Limited Release Toasted Barrel Finish

It’s that time of year again when whiskey enthusiasts eagerly await Michter’s annual Toasted Whiskey release. This year, it’s their bourbon, finished in a toasted barrel. As a big fan of Michter’s past releases, I had high expectations, but for the first time since the original release, I wasn’t quite as impressed by the flavor profile.

Unlike previous years, this edition is notably sweeter on the palate, with a rich, viscous mouthfeel. The sweetness seems to come from the vanilla notes imparted by the toasted barrel, which slightly overpowers the typically well-balanced Michter’s bourbon. Still, it’s a pleasant mix of caramel, vanilla, and toast, with a sweet, lingering finish.

While it may not have wowed me, it’s certainly enjoyable to sip neat—especially as an after-dinner cordial. If you’d like to try it, we have a bottle open at the Cellars, with one-ounce pours available for $8. Enjoy!
